The History of Saboaria

For over two centuries, this building has been home to noble families and artisans, with a story deeply intertwined with Porto’s rich soap-making heritage.

In the 19th century, a Galician family, known for founding the famous Saboaria do Bolhão, made this house their residence, using it as an extension of their renowned soap factory. Over the years, the building changed hands multiple times, yet its connection to soap production and storage remained constant. One of Porto’s most iconic soaps, Offenbach, was crafted here—an artisanal creation that has transcended generations and reached homes around the world.

Situated at Rua do Bonjardim, the building has undergone a meticulous restoration, preserving its elegant baroque façade and maintaining key elements of Porto’s architectural identity. The renovation, led by NN Arquitectura, focused on reinforcing the original structure while seamlessly integrating modern comforts. Inspired by the building’s past, the designers carefully restored details such as black and white hydraulic mosaics, originally found in the floors, and the distinctive brownish-green carpentry, reflecting the essence of its historical character.

Today, Torel Saboaria stands as a tribute to Porto’s artisanal heritage, offering a space where history, craftsmanship, and contemporary elegance coexist in perfect harmony.
